Hangin' in the East Village and on oak island

On Friday afternoon I rode over to the east village to hang with my friends Betty and Michael  and their kids Phillip and Helen. After riding across the Manhattan bridge, I went through Chinatown To get to their house. I grabbed the backpack and walked five blocks to whole foods. I grabbed the ingredients for dinner and something for lunch the next day and walked back to make dinner for everyone. Along the way I stopped to take a picture of the new Citybikes that are going to be available all over town starting next week. They are already available for those that pre-bought yearly memberships. It seems like a great program. Bikes are taking over the city.

On Saturday Helen and Philip competed in the citywide track meet. Waiting for dad to retrieve the car from a few blocks away.

That's Helen looking back just before the start of the race. She ran the 800 meter. After the meet we drove out to their place on oak island. They are one of 25 owners of small cottages on an island of roughly 250 acres. There is no electricity and only a boardwalk connecting most of the houses. When we left the stadium the temperature was 90° but when we got to oak island the temperature was 68. It is magical on the island.

Dinner was great, especially the grilled cauliflower As night falls the oil lamps and low voltage lighting comes on and the books come out.

In the morning we got up and had a great  breakfast and then Betty asked what was planned for lunch and Michael said he hadn't brought anything so Betty went out and dug clams harvested oysters, harvested things from the garden and we had us a feast from the soil and the sea.
