Seeing my peeps and exploring Ashland Oregon

I was really looking forward to seeing my sister Sherry and my nephew Shane and his wife Stacy and their son Keller. What I wasn't prepared for was how I would fall in love with their little town of Ashland. This town is a real gem. It's nestled along I-5 between the coastal mountains and the peaks of Mt. Shasta and Crater Lake. Sherry has a nice view from her apartment.

As many of you know I have eaten some great ice cream on this trip from all over north America and some of it has been stellar. Ashland has a few creameries but Mix is outstanding. Here I get two thumbs up for my trip which is what I give the ice cream at Mix.

The first day in Ashland I took a nice 57mile loop ride up to Hyatt lake and explored the hills and mountains east of Ashland, returning on Dead Indian Road. It was a great trip and had me ready for more.

I had another lovely meal with Shane and Stacy and walked around the town a bit. This town of 20,000 people has an amazing array of shops and services for such a small place, owed to the presence of the university and the ongoing Shakespearean theater that happens here which attracts visitors and money from all over. I could really live here folks. Enough said for now but this place rocks and has things I wish existed in Austin but without the traffic and all the people. The next day I took one of the best rides of the trip up Mt Ashland. It was a 5,400 foot continuous climb with the last 3 miles being on a rough dirt and gravel road at 10% grade and the last 100 meters being no more than a goat path that was even steeper. It topped out at 7,400 feet and the views were just beautiful. They had a lot of smoke from forest fires earlier this summer but that cleared out a week before I got here.

Mt Shasta is about 25 miles away and the top is usually obscured by clouds and snow capped.

Hawk floating on the currents.

They have big Madrone trees here that reach around 40 feet in height.

On Monday afternoon we drove to Diamond lake and picked up Keller. He is a delightful boy and I enjoyed watching the family interact. I'm hoping they come to Texas soon for a nice long visit.
